Trump, an Angry Neighbour: A Tumultuous First Year of US–Latin America Relations

Speakers: Prof. Javier Corrales (Amherst College, USA),

Prof. dr. Barbara Hogenboom (CEDLA, University of Amsterdam) & Dr. Julienne Weegels (CEDLA, University of Amsterdam)

One year into Donald Trump’s second presidency, the United States policies and actions towards Latin America and the Caribbean have caused dramatic social, political and economic effects. Although not completely unprecedented, the current US attitude and various types of attacks on the region and towards latinos in the US is profoundly changing US-LAC relations. And as this is only year one of Trump 2.0, what we see might be the start of something even bigger and more lasting.

These developments beg for an academic analysis of the nature, causes, direction and implications of Trump's presidency for latinos and the LAC region. Do we see a new type of US imperialism, or rather a return to the past? Will LAC countries become increasingly divided, or are there signs of them pulling together? How are LAC politics affected? What is happening with latinos who are still in the US, and with those who are deported? How are LAC societies and organizations reacting? What cultural reactions and shifts can be observed?  And what effect do we see or expect for LAC’s environment and for its economic and social development?

There are many pressing question but answering them is not easy, as the changes are new, partly obscured and ongoing. For this academic workshop we invite scholars of all generations (graduate students as well as junior and senior researchers) from all disciplines to join us for an early assessment of the changes in the field of their expertise.

You can register for the event as an auditor or as a presenter in one of the roundtables if you're currently doing research around these issues, or if you see ways in which they are impacting the groups you're working with. If you'd like to present, please send us the title and a 150 word abstract of your 7-minute roundtable presentation by 7 January 2025. We will communicate the selected list of presenters soon after.
